Why is it when coworkers become supervisors they become tyrants who micromanage and control everything? I’ve known perfectly nice people (I am a counselor after all) who have been promoted and literally become unrecognizable to those former co-workers who have the unfortunate fate of sticking around afterwards. In my most recent position as an adolescent drug and alcohol counselor for the city’s health department, I have seen it the worst it’s ever been. Is it due to working in a system that supports managers and supervisors no matter what the issue is? Is it because city workers are typically people who have stuck around in the system for so long waiting for their pension to kick in that they are bitter and looking for someone to take out their anger on? Is it because they’ve been in the trenches for so long that when they’re lifted up and given a small amount of power they go nuts with it?
